Heritage

Located on North End Road in Barnet, London, the Golders Green Hippodrome has been a beacon of entertainment and cultural significance since its opening in 1913. Designed by the esteemed Theatre Architect Bertie Crewe, this Grade II listed building stands as a masterpiece of Victorian architecture, with its ornate plasterwork and design still captivating audiences today.

The Hippodrome’s prime location next to the Golders Green tube and bus station made it a hub for pre- and post-London tours, quickly earning a reputation for its spectacular annual pantomimes and renowned performances. It has seen legendary acts like AC/DC, and its stage has been graced by iconic shows such as The Dave Allen Show and Monty Python’s Flying Circus. 27th October 1977 AC/DC played live at The Hippodrome that was filmed and is available on YouTube.

History

In the late 1960s, the BBC recognised the Hippodrome’s cultural value, acquiring the theatre and transforming it into a TV studio before converting it into a Radio Theatre, where it became the home of the BBC Concert Orchestra. The venue continued to host a variety of events, from theatre to boxing and comedy, many of which were broadcast live on BBC radio, making it a cherished part of British broadcasting history.

The Hippodrome’s history is also marked by special moments, such as the final live theatre performance on February 18, 1968, a star-studded event that ended with a nostalgic farewell broadcast live on the BBC. Over the decades, the venue has undergone several transformations, including a stint as a TV and radio studio, but its spirit as a cultural landmark has never dimmed.

Today

Today, the Hippodrome continues to be a testament to London’s enduring love for the arts and community. Whether you’re here to relive its storied past or to create new memories, the Golders Green Hippodrome offers an unparalleled experience steeped in history and tradition.

Now owned by Hillsong Church, the building needs substantial investment in the heating, cooling and outside façade to fulfil the vision of bringing the building back to be a beacon of entertainment and community significance in Golders Green.

The design team lead by architects Flanagan and Lawrence have made some conceptual drawings that have planning and heritage approval below. The designs include reinstating the external canopy and making the exterior a welcoming and inviting hub for the community and for live entertainment.
